Events

I’ve been involved in judging and organising events for longer than I like to think about, 10 years to be exact.  Here’s a list of my current annual events, for more information, flyers, coverage and video clips please check the index to the right of the page>>>>>>>>>>

WAR OF THE ROSES:  Now in it’s fifth year WOTR is one of the UK’s premiere ‘core’ skate events and a firm favourite. It’s basic concept is to run two comps at two park over two days (one in Lancashire and one in Yorkshire) The WOTR format is in direct contrast to the UK Champs and other organised comps, this is more of a jam and captures the essence of a skateboard session with friends. The whole thing is chaotic, spontaneous and incredibly fun. Many skaters that wouldn’t enter comps normally lap this one up as it’s relaxed format makes the whole experience a little less stressful! Attendance is around 500-700 per day most of those also get involved as ‘competitors’ at some point.

UKSA NATIONAL SKATEBOARD CHAMPIONSHIPS: As unbelievable as it seems there had been no UK skateboard championships since the 90’s. Whilst it seemed like companies constantly blew their marketing budget on trying to come up with some stupid gimmicky format for events no one had actually got their act together and just run a standard competition properly! The first year of the Championships played host to the top 150+ UK pro/sponsored skaters in the UK under one roof for the first time ever. The atmosphere and energy was amazing and the event has become a firm and favourite fixture in the UK skate calender.

UKSA MINI RAMP CHAMPIONSHIPS:
X-Site Skatpeark in Skegness has one of the finest mini ramps in the country and is therefore the perfect place to hold the UK mini ramp champs. Taking place at the end of the contest season this is always a well attended get together with over 100 competitors split between unsponsored, sponsored/pro and girls groups.

CONCRETE CARNIVAL:
Penzance hosted the first event back in 2005, since then the venue has changed but the theory remains the same: A skate Jam on some of the finest concrete the UK has to offer. 2010’s event is confirmed for Thornes park in Wakefield but after that we’ll just have to see what the nations skatepark builders come up with.

UK INDEPENDENT VERT SERIES: As vert skating started regaining popularity in the early noughties the elder statesmen of the discipline started holding comps on their local ramps to encourage the new generation. This over time naturally evolved into the Independent Vert Series and has events in Newquay, Corby, Blackpool, Birmingham and London.

YOUNG GUNS: 2009 saw the first Young Guns competition held at Adrenaline Alley skatepark in Corby. The idea of this comp was to provide a proving ground for the younger up and coming skateboarders in the UK and help open the doors to becoming sponsored. It was a huge success with over 100 competitors travelling from as far afield as Aberdeen, 2010 looks set to be bigger still.

VANS/PROGRESSION SKATE CAMPS: Last year we hosted skate camps in Manchester, Blackpool and Castleford. The camps were really well attended and received. For more information on Skate Camps and skate coaching in general please check out pro-gression.co.uk

RELENTLESS ‘RIDE WITH US’ TOUR:
What started off as a bit of idle banter amongst a group of friends along the lines of “How cool would it be to have a tour that anyone could come on” became a reality a few years later thanks to support from Nueu sunglasses. The first year took as all round Cornwall and year two took in the sunny sights of Scotland. For the 3rd tour Relentless Energy drinks got involved and enabled us to broaden our range a bit. Two separate convoys travelled the length of the country and converged on the NASS festival in Somerset.

VANS SHOP RIOT: In October 2009 shop skate teams from all over the UK converged on Central Skatepark in Manchester to find out who was number one and to win an expenses paid trip to the European finals in Belgium. As it happens local boys Black Sheep came top out of the 30 teams. This year the venue will change and we’ll do it all again.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for all of these events, please mail me for further info: nic@backroomoperations.com

In addition to these I’ve been involved in numerous other one off events, skatepark openings, demos, tours and competitions.  If you’ve got a project in mind please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
